Hair Miniaturization: What Causes It?

Normally, hair follicles produce a strand of hair that grows, sheds, rests, and re-grows in a cyclical fashion. This is known as the hair growth cycle, and it is estimated that it occurs about 20 times over the course of a healthy individual’s lifetime. Sometimes, however, a phenomenon known as hair miniaturization occurs. In this instance, hair becomes thinner and finer each time it progresses through its growth cycle. When severe, hair miniaturization may even cause hair to stop growing entirely. Genetics, hormones, and nutrition are among the top causes of hair miniaturization in men and women.
